I have always been a pretty active person and a healthy eater. I owe a lot of that to my parents who enrolled me in gymnastics at an early age and made me healthy, delicious, home cooked meals. It also helps that my parents are still very active. My dad walks at least 10 miles a day and my mom is super into Pilates. In my adulthood, I have become obsessed with Pinterest. I find almost all of my workouts on there as well as ideas for tons of healthy meals and treats! Most recently, I invested in a FitBit Flex activity monitor. Being able to see how active I am on a daily basis has made me want to work harder.
What’s a day in the life for you? How do you fit healthy foods and exercise into your busy day?
I’m a teacher and also in graduate school so my schedule can sometimes be super chaotic! If I have the choice to take the subway, drive or walk, I always walk. It’s a guaranteed way to fit in some physical activity every day. I try to go to the gym as much as possible which sometimes means stopping in to run for 20 minutes if that’s the only window of time I have. If I really don’t have time to get to the gym and back, I try to do short workouts at home, or even just do some pushups, sit-ups or planks before I jump in the shower. I started to bring my lunch to work instead of buying it and that has made it so much easier to fit in healthy foods.
What are your favorite forms of exercise? Have they changed over time, or are you a life long lover of something?
Currently, my favorite form of exercise is anything that makes me sweat! I’m in the midst of a love affair with exercise and I can’t seem to get enough (until my body tells me to rest!). However, I have always loved sprinting and yoga, and I still do. I have been trying to mix up my cardio and alternate sprint intervals one day and longer distance running the next. I’ve also been taking advantage of the wonderful FREE yoga and pilates classes offered at the Brooklyn Bridge Park this summer and try to get there as much as possible.
Do you follow any specific diets or avoid certain foods? Why or why not?
The days of eating a whole bag of Milano cookies have long gone and I am so much more aware of what I’m putting into my body now. I think it’s so important to build healthy habits in your twenties so that it’s even easier as you get older. I have to admit, I really don’t cook a lot for myself so when I order in or go out to dinner I try to avoid meat that isn’t organic or humanely raised. This has been really hard for me because I am a huge cheeseburger lover and now I’m very picky about it! But since I have made that decision, I have started eating a lot more vegetables and greens and it makes the occasional burger that much more decadent (thankfully I live in a neighborhood with TWO amazing burger restaurants). I do have a big sweet tooth which I can also thank my dad for. I really can’t resist sweets, so I try to monitor my portions and always go for the kid sized ice cream.
I’m in a rut. What would you advise to help me integrate healthy habits back into my life?
I always find that the more active I am, the more active I want to be. However, I can definitely get into a rut at times. After all, it isn’t easy to integrate healthy habits in a busy lifestyle. When I’m at a lull, I try to remember how good I feel when I take care of myself. I like to workout because it makes me feel good (basic human instinct, right?). The tricky part is reminding yourself of that and then immediately diving back in (literally or figuratively).
